Often when I talk to other Entrepreneurs about SEO their eyes glaze over from confusion. They think it’s too technical & overwhelming, and they would rather not deal with it.

In this article, I hope to demystify SEO and show you how it will help you grow your business. So…What is SEO?

SEOSearch Engine Optimization, is a marketing technique that focuses on helping your business show up when a potential customer searches for things related to your business — your website appears on the first page of Google — and hopefully near the top.

There are essentially 3 distinct layers to SEO.

The 1st layer is Keyword Research. This acts as the foundational strategy that guides everything else you do. The 2nd layer is called On-Site SEO, and the 3rd layer is called Off-Site SEO. Each layer builds on the previous layer and you need to have each layer in place before you can add the next one.

Search engine optimization is the single most powerful method for driving traffic — and potential customers — to your site.

Studies have suggested that anywhere from 60–80% of all website traffic started with a search.

SEO is the best traffic source for quality leads, when done correctly and not misleadingly — oh, and Google will punish your website if you mislead the traffic sent to your website.

When someone types something into Google, they’re actively looking for something. Ranking for keywords related to your business, you can get your website in front of people who are looking for your products or services.

It is a very sustainable source of traffic. Other traffic sources require continuous management; such as: paying for ads, sending emails, or creating social media content. With SEO, once you’ve done the work to get your website ranking highly in search engines, you’ll keep getting traffic month after month.

SEO is free — SEO doesn’t have to cost anything except your investment of time.

So, set yourself up for success and Google will rank and showcase your content. If you’re consistent with the practices discussed over the next few articles, you’ll be able to rank at (or near) the top of search engine results.

SEMSearch Engine Marketing, refers to paid search ads like Google Ads. It might be something you want to look at once you’ve built a strong foundation with SEO.

Now that you know the 3 most valuable aspects of spending time learning SEO, (1. Quality leads, 2. Sustainable traffic, 3. SEO is FREE), make sure to stay tuned for the following articles detailing the 3 layers of SEO.
